BATISMO!!!

Sending pics now while I have a chance.
His name is Wesley, the son of Elizangela - who we just baptized. He is awesome! Him and his mom are going to stay strong in the faith!

James is busy saving souls -- their mission goal is 25 baptisms per month - vs 4 per month in the States!  His companions love him and they are working hard!

You have no idea how much this means to me...and every other brasileiro! =) after each lunch with members, we ask:
Irmã, tem algo que a gente pode fazer por você?
"Sure elder! this one time, an elder brought over a jar of pasta da amendoim for me! we made (i dont remember what kind of treat she said in reply) and it was super great!"
but Sister....i dont want to share =)

 love ya!

Birthday in the Mission Field...

WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! GO JAMES CARTWRIGHT!!!! GO CHELSEA!!!! Tell those bums to email me! =D

To celebrate (my birthday), we worked! hard! =) we had a baptism!
And our recent convert brought a cake and set up a surpise party for me after the baptism! =)

Elizangela is our recent convert and we just baptized her son. I have unofficially been adopted into her family. She said that 'você precisa uma mãe Capixaba!' She calls me cabelo de oro or golden hair. =D So no worries Mom, I am taken care of here =) just because I'm blonde.

And we are teaching a single mom who reminds me of you! Hard working, smart, has a 5 year old son, and she's 28. She had an angel come to her in a dream to tell her that everything we have taught is completely true! we are trying hard to baptise her because we can't help her progress with out it!

I miss you tons mom! We will be able to skype on Christmas!

Love,
James

Success Doesn't Always Come as Planned....

The picture this week is one of the suprise birthday party we helped with for Alvanir (the older woman on the left). This picture is great because almost everyone here says o meu Deus -oh my God- and EVERYone says 'graças a Deus' -grace to God- when something good happened.
Here, after seeing everyone gathered around, she did the classic, raise the hands to the air and say out loud 'graças a Deus' Maybe you'd have to be here to appreciate it =)
Otherwise, know that I am doing good. I am slowly forgetting words and grammar in English. We work hard, God gives our investigators miracles, and...they fall off the face of the earth. But Elisangela, the lady we baptized just last week, wants her whole family, neighborhoods, and ancestors to accept the gospel of Jesus Christ!
Love you all and I wish I had the time to write personalized emails to everyone of ya. But we barely have
time here in the LAN-houses.

Mother to son.... the power of trial and belief

James,

I loved your story about the miracle.  God is watching over you.....this I know!  You are going to have some challenges. ..and likely have some times when you just don't think you can make it......and usually what I have found is that when you are at your breaking point.....you have to just hold on because you are just a breath away from breaking that tissue paper- thin wall .... to the other side of something really grande.  Your life is going to be grande....so you're going to have some walls to break through and to tear down.....that .... you will just have to believe that somehow you will be able to do it.

The greatest blessings always seem to come after the greatest challenges.  And you'll find, if you think back on human history - those truly great people also had incredible challenges - Hard to accomplish something truly great without great effort.

I see people get through impossible things all the time that they will tell u they can't do....but somehow they do.  And so will you!!!  Funny how we seem to 'understand', while we're sitting comfortably in class, that through God - all things are possible - but when we're knee deep in muck, and the fog is over our eyes.....at least for a moment, we're not sure.

When you're not sure -- just borrow some of my belief in you -- I have plenty to spare!
I love you so much!

to me
Thank you Mom.
I am certainly learning this. Back in the states, I could tell that the truly powerful missionaries, like my trainer, had a real knowledge of the atonement. I wanted that. Sure, I have had a few trials, but my life was really easy. Parents who loved me, the gospel, all I could ever need and want.
I didn't want to ask God for a trial, but at the same time, I wanted that relationship with the savior.
meu companheiro mostrou um vídeo a mim. Você precisa assistir isso! 'A Expiação e a obra missionário' do Elder Jeffrey R Holland. Eu sei que para pregar sobre a expiação de Jesus Cristo, eu preciso andar pelo menos um pouco da caminho que ele andou.

News from Brazil

Isso é um moto. In the US, we think of motorbikes having a 400cc engine at least...but here, they are about 150cc max. Almost everyone has these! If they dont have a moto, the cars that they have are alot smaller as well.
This is good though, because the lines on the road are not much more than guidelines anyway =)

This is the view from the mission home. We are not working here... we work in areas that are very similar to the first picture. The homes are very open and close to one another. Like the people here. Everyone is outside or looking out a window, so it is much easier to talk with them.
Also, there are brick and concrete fences around each home. Então, instead of knocking doors, we clap our hands outside these fences.

I suppose the hardest thing is feeling like I cant do anything at times! Imagine a place that has everyone speaking a different language...and you are to help them understand how to come to Christ! There are times when I get frustrated because I just want to help, but cant understand...then my brain gets tired and I start drifting off to sleep in peoples houses!
However, it is a blessing that the other three missionaries that I live with only know a handful of words in English. I HAVE to speak Portuguese. I know that I was called to this mission by a Prophet of God. I know that I do have a purpose here even if I have to wait for it...its only the first week. Ill learn. All I have to do for now is open my mouth and share my love of the Savior with everyone!

Grateful note of thanks.....

-This was a note James shared with me, that  he sent to one of his leaders who has been a huge influence for good in James' life -- indeed, in the lives of all who know him: .......

"You are a model to follow. My companion has been a little under the weather recently, so we have not gotten out as much. I am deffinately not the best missionary, but you and my last companion (who has just gone AP this transfer) have really ingrained in me what President Hinkley's father told him, "forget yourself and go to work." My companion is a good guy and a great missionary, but I'm really striving for charity and humility so that I know what things I need to push for and what things I shouldn't - since sometimes I feel more motivated than him. I'm deffinately not better - just want to work hard! So we're meeting in the middle.
I know that God is watching over your family for sure. Your family truly feels like you are all living up to your potential. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, when practiced, makes the home a safe haven and a refuge from the forces of the outside world. I love whenever I find a family like yours out here in the South Dakota Rapid City Mission.
I have already learned so much here on the mission. One very important thing I learned is that we cannot create miracles/powerful lessons/blessings from heaver, however, we can do the best we can to anticipate. God will ultimately decide the outcome of every effort to bring others to His fold. Some people will choose God and some will not. However, as we do all we can, we can rest assured that we will not miss any miracles that God has prepared for us.

I love you Brother L,
Your friendship and leadership has been an anchor for me.

From the tender heart of a grateful and blessed mother -- Thanks to You and your family Brother L.....and all those who have been a force for good in our family's lives.   - James' mom

The baptism of Bobby Knight and Justyce Viet!
These people were already prepared!
Bobby is a proud Texan Veteran, with the accent, stories, and friendliness to back it up. He has changed his life! He has stopped smoking. He has stopped drinking. He has shown that he is willing to follow Christ the best he can by being baptised!

https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=f85d6a950c&view=att&th=14170046bfe9d3fe&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=f_hm7xls760&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P_GrdOo-tvsS7kSU6VK_ihJ&sadet=1383190056146&sads=WiMfVuHznutWad2aiJkfYYmiZnI
Justyce is his step-daughter. She is the epitome of a high-school girl. She is awesome, but rather air-headed =) Even though she is just a freshman, she has understood what the scriptures have taught and has decided to follow Jesus too!

Andrea is the Mom. She was already a member of the church but hadn't gone for a while. It is so great to be able to play a small part in bringing this family together. Andrea is a great mom. Bobby loves his step-children, his wife, and the Lord.

Snow in Wyoming....and James' letter to his Dad - Dennis Reinhardt

I hope this email finds you safe, well, and happy wherever you are in the world!
It snowed two days ago! It's worse than North Idaho! Though it has almost all melted by today, the damage is still visable. The trees still had all their (mostly green) leaves and the snow was preceded by a rainy day. That means that all these poor trees - which Sheridan, WY has a ton of - got overloaded with too much heavy snow on their leaves. There are fallen and broken branches all over the town.
Though many were without power, it gave Elder Dahl and I a great oppurtunity to get out and serve! Alot of people don't know that we are not infact a cult and we are infact christian - helping people in our area really helps to clear up this concern. =)
I just had my first experience with what war really does yesterday...Thank you so much for serving, Dad, I just hope that you haven't experience the trauma that this man has.
As we walked, we waved to a man smoking outside his apartment. After coming over and exchanging greetings, we found out that he knew that we were missionaries, and that he was a vetran who while he seemed to be all there, something was a little off.
Long story short, this man has tons of pain. It seems like he has had deep and dark depression that has been eating at him for a very long time. What he had done and what was done to him had left him multilated on the inside.
Promise I won't preach to ya too much, Dad =) But as we talked, you could feel not only the pain that he had, but how much potential he still has! He is a father! Grandfather! Still, he has been trying to deal with this pain for 20 years (at least).
He agreed to meet with us again. I am excited. We really care about him after just meeting him. He has heard for a long time that Christ can heal him...This time, with us and God willing, we will be able to show him how that actually works.
I'll keep ya posted with this guy if that's ok - this will really be a test of my faiths and my beliefs. From my personal experience, if I align my life with what Christ has taught, I have peace, hope, and pain turns to understanding. I have had no hardships that can compare to this man's (his name is James) trials at all!
Love ya lots, Dad
Thank you for all the support, love, and emails!

BRAZIL - and news from Elder Reinhardt

 I love that book of Mormon. That is such a sacred book to me. I know that as i read that book, my life would improve. I hope that you recognize that those notes in there can be a personal letter to you from me and that book is a personal letter to you from GOD.

I am indeed warm enough =) There have been enough leftovers from past missionaries that I have taken for myself. I may purchase some boots - but I don't know if I'll be staying or leaving :p

I love you all with all my heart.

Hey all! I'll be heading out to Brazil here next Monday! Wish me luck!

I am very excited!!! ...i've been cramming in all the portuguese that I can handle - this means flash cards, reading, watching Buscando a fe em Cristo instead of Finding Faith in Christ. =)

Found out that my MTC comp who i love to pieces will be on the plane with me! he has been serving in Minneasota and he just got his Visa too! our Mission President said that Brasil is only handing out 100 visas a month...so the church will not be calling any more foreigners to Brasil. There will still be natives to the country going out to serve, but only those who orignally have calls there have a hope of going still....I'M THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS!...kinda =)

That's fantastic that you've been reading the Book of Mormon! (I love our message. It's either true or not. Joseph Smith was a prophet or he wasn't. It all hinges on the Book of Mormon!) No, the Book is for you for these two years.  (James sent his studied and highlighted Book of Mormon!)  I cherish that book for the wisdom and truth that it gave me. Now, I get to scour through the quad that you both gave me for seminary. I am learning so much from the Book of Mormon and the Bible!

Doing a "companionship study" is such a great idea! As far as what to study? Have a time set aside every day (as best as you can) startand end with a prayer to be taught by the spirit, know how to apply what you learn, to have the truth of what you're reading to be revealed unto you, and then have your first study devoted to page 17 in Preach My Gospel.

Our companionship study consists of practicing and reading for our investigators. The first part is just spent sharing what we learned. So one suggestion could be to both have a personal study and then for the both of you, come together and testify of what you read. Tell him what you learned and how it will help you. Ask him for insight on verses that you didn't understand or that you really loved. As he has just studied as well, he may have different promptings on the same verses. What he learned may be different, but as he devoted that study time to God, those promptings are just as important to him as yours are to you.

I love you all very much and I know with all my heart that as you continue to devote yourself to God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, everything will work out. If it didn't God would not be the loving God that we know. Though there are some pains that may not be fully worked out until we stand before our savior, Jesus Christ promises peace in this life and eternal joy in the life to come.

God be with you!

THis is family night with a family! the story of ammon reinactment

So I just had my first "ET" Emergency Transfer. One elder went home on a medical release, so last thursday, at 10PM, President Anderson told us that we would be picking up an elder from Sheridan, Wyoming and that I would be replacing him. I miss my last two companions, but now I get to experience another part of this huge mission!

Last night, I got to meet some of the young-single-adult branch that we have here (we are over a ward and a YSA branch). After talking with one of the guys, I have a feeling that there will be many Patriotic, cowboy-boot wearing, Hicks. =D I'm so excited! We'll see how well i fit in though :)

Two nights ago, we had an INTENSE electrical storm. We are totally safe, but there was sooooo much lightening (I'll try to send a video)

Last night, I met Jessica. She's about 21, lives with her younger sister, and is investigating the church. Also, there is a marrigae happy Return Missionary after her =p =) He's a good kid, but...i dunno.
She's our neighbor in our complex and on her porch, she really opened up to us. Through out the whole conversatoin, I think i was feeling true charity for her - the pure love of christ. She knew that baptism is a big committment and she was worried that she might be doing it for the wrong reasons - for this RM. She felt that whenever she gave her whole heart to something, it let her down (she does have a very intese story behind that). She doesn't want to get hurt and she wants to fully committ for the right reasons.
God let us bear powerful testimony. I promised her, with all I had, that if she prayed then and there with us, asking God if He loves her, that God would let her know by the spirit she would feel in her heart. I offered a very simple prayer first to give her an example...and she still didn't want to pray.
That's fine, we can never make anybody do anything. We never want to force, we only want to invite. THough I am bummed that she missed out on that blessing, I know that God loves her so much. I know that as she continues to pray and read the Book of Mormon, she will develope a personal relationship with her savior, Jesus Christ. Then she will be able to know for a surety who's gospel this is, who she is committing to.

This is Christ's church because he is at it's head. It is led by him and it teaches his doctrine. I love being a missionary!

Though I have moved, I have the same address. I have no new news on the VIsa. However, I'm working hard and putting my whole soul into this whever I am.

Love you all a TON!
Elder James Reinhardt

...My Son, My Friend...My Inspiration...

Mother, I love you.

I won't have much time yet. But I could praise you, thank you , and stand in awe for all the things you have done for me and for this family. I would write more, but I spent most of this time (after reading your mail) watching a single mom try and help her 8 yr old son with online school.

She looks frustrated, but she is giving it her all. Mom, for you, for God, and for her, I wrote my testimony and a little bit of our story in a Book of Mormon hoping that she reads the chapter when Jesus blesses the children. I know that the gopsel of Jesus Christ helped us and I know that it will help her.

Even when we forget our testimonies, even when we are pushed under by all the tempests of the world...Jesus Christ can and will lift us up - if we let him.

 Expect a Casette from me sometime soon  with a little bit of journal entries on it for you all. Mom, i've said it before, I'll say it again, and I'm sorry I didn't realize it sooner: you are the best member missionary ever! You truly care and work hard to make everyone you come in contact with feel the love you have for our savior.

Mom, I wish I could wrap my arms around ya and give you a huge hug. I can't right now, but I know that our Father in Heaven can.

God has reminded me to use your testimony of prayer alot this week. That whenever you asked God if He loved you, you could feel His spirit. Your impact is great.

Please look up "mountains to climb" by Henry B Eyring - it has a Mormon Message that is way powerful as well. love you!.

 one of many sweet bikes during Rally!

I've typed and deleted this email 3 times now...what I want to get across is that we are working hard. We teach the gospel to everyone who will listen. We grow a ton ourselves.

I know that I do this personally because I want to bring as much peace and blessings as i can to the people I meet. I want to bring as many people as I can with me to heaven when life here is up. =)

I want to present the message that Christ is the source of peace, his church is back today, and the only way to know if I'm lying or not is to read and pray about the Book of Mormon.

I'm not a perfect teacher, I haven't been on this earth that long, and every committment I extend I extend to myself as well (because I need a ton of improvement too). But God is our Heavenly Father! He loves these people! He loves each and every one of them and He sent His Son down here to show us that love. God has a perfect plan for each of us to return to live with Him. If I can help even just one person come to that truth - then I'll be gosh darned stoked. =)

 https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=f85d6a950c&view=att&th=1409805dd4df9f80&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=f_hkk1xvba0&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P_GrdOo-tvsS7kSU6VK_ihJ&sadet=1379822470142&sads=YdjLPCNISLs1Wji50hJXwTIPUH0
Elder Edwards (my trainer) and I were biking down the road when we pass this hitchhiking guy who gives us a genuine smile...hmm. At the bottom of the hill, we stop.
Edwards, "Should we talk to that guy?"
Me, "Sure. Better to have faith than miss a prompting."
We start talking and He's been in the states for a year working. He met a girl (at Sturgis - but don't worry, she's still cute) who he had then known for 4 days. He was thinking of either staying around for her or continuing to California for work. We walked with him to the hospital where this girl would pick him up and asked what he knew about Jesus Christ's church back on the earth.
We sat down on a bench and proceeded to teach about God's love, prophets, and the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We were cut short when his lady friend showed up (another hipster - if they were married and sealed, they'd make a great couple!). We thought we'd never see him again, but we did feel like we tried hard to help him develop more faith in Christ.
Then, we see him 6 more times in 1.5 weeks!!! This last time we saw him, we had enough time to teach again. I know that if he prays and reads, he can get it! During the lesson, he asked if there were prophets today. YES!  Excited to meet with him again - we challenged him to read the BoM and pray.

Also, Ben Kohler. I don't have much time, but briefly. Imagine a rough, 6'4" bouncer with a couple 'tats' one of which says "the reaper"
I've talked about this guy before, and I love him so much! He has had a rough life. But he has said, "when I look into my baby's eyes, and she looks back saying 'take care of me, I'm helpless, innocent, and perfect'...all the hate in my heart leaves for a moment."
Talk about progress, we asked him why it is important to follow God's commandments. I wish I could portray the power that was in him as her said, "It is the purpose of life. I want to live with my family forever - and if we're not living with God in the Celestial Kingdom, then we are not living with our whole family."

Wow. He gets it. This church is true. It is lead by God. He is changing his life! I am striving to become the best child of God I can! Read Mosiah 2:41. That's what were striving for here and the prize at the end is more than we can imagine! Read Romans 8: 16-17! (I think that's the refference) :)

I Love you All!

...Finding People Who are Ready to Listen...

No news on the Visa yet! As soon as I find out, I'll let you know. It could be a week, it could be 2 months =p it's just trust in the Lord and waiting. All I hope is that I have no regrets when I leave. That I've done my best and talked to everyone that I was supposed to meet.

You all should check out South Dakota! It's way cooler than I thought! We live in Rapid City, our apartments are right next to a National Guard base, so alot of mornings you can find at least 5 missionaries running around the track =) The weather is grand! from 50 being the coldest (so far) to like...80ish? Warm enough to be sweating anyways =)

There is a bike rally about 20 miles away in Sturgis. Check it out, but don't check it out...the bikes would be cool to see, but I also here that it can be a drunk, angry, motorbikin' Mardi Gras =p  soo many Harleys around here! Regardless, I can say that my urge to get a bike when I get back increases every day.

Our latest P-day (play day or personal day) after shopping, we went out to Jewel Cave. I wish I had pictures, but I forgot to bring my camera to the computer today! The cave is clamed to be 167miles discovered and that's only like 15% I think? Anyways, check it out! We went on an hour and a half guided tour and it was soo pretty! Dad, I'm guessing you could appreciate the idea of dark and undiscovered territory with your diving career =)

Something else cool was when we knocked on a door and a chief and medicine man of the Lakota Sundancers came out. He prayed for us with a drum and song in his native language. =D I learned alot about him and his religion - that there was a lone woman at the start of the universe crying for man, for company. That a gamma ray shot a huge piece of rock and cleaved it in two - also cleaving the universal darkness into light and darkness...though it was cool, it was hard to follow. (I'm glad my religion makes sense ;p )

As we talked, he, William Bravebird (with a native name that sounded something like Zedikiah =)  ), tied Sundancing in with the Man (government) publicized school and other things that he felt hurt him and his people. Though I do not blame him for his complaints, I can say that the gospel of Jesus Christ can bring so much peace! However, he was not too open to hear us. This is the pits sometimes! I can say that with this missionary calling, I love the people here soo much more than I could imagine! I see him as someone who like me is just trying to find peace in this life. I know that God can give him that and that as a representative for Jesus Christ, God has sent me to that man for a chance to hear of his gospel. Because I love him (as a child of God) it hurts when they don't want to listen.

It just comes down to finding people that are ready to listen.

I can say that I thought I knew that this church was true before I left, but as I study daily from the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and Preach My Gospel - I can start to say that I know without a doubt! From the 29th chapter of Isiah testifying of the BoM (when Oliver Cowdery takes the translation to the linguist in New York) to the first vision that Joseph Smith had with God the Father and Jesus Christ, it is true.

Studying this as a missionary is simply the best! There is alot of opposition to the church, some bad history, and plenty of myths out there. Many differeing voices telling them many different things? So what should these people believe?

As I've learned the gospel with a missionary mindset, I'm only studying the simple truths in a simple way. "God is our Heavenly Father. We are His children. He has a body of flesh and bone that is glorified and perfected. He loves us. He weeps with us when we suffer and rejoices when we do what is right. He wants to communicate with us, and we can communicate with Him through sincere prayer." This is what I teach and what I reaffirm to myself.

We teach that Jeus Christ set up one church and that that church was brought back to the earth through the prophet Joseph Smith. The only way to really know this yourself is to read the Book of Mormon and ask God if it is true.

It makes sense! Prophets were called, followed, disobeyed, and then God took the prophet from the people (look at Noah). But He always reaches out in love and calls another prophet. In this cycle, Joseph Smith was only the next in line - but this time, to establish the gospel that would not fade from the earth ever again.

Whenever we teach, we teach real people who come to find that this is what they were missing from their life or that we are crazy. =) and that's what it comes down to. Either the Book of Mormon is God's word or Joseph made it up. When we teach, we (and they) know that we are only the guides. Where they will get their answer will be through praying to God and reading. If this is true, God won't let you pass it up!

The only catch is that they have to pray and read really wanting to know. There are some people who only want to know about the LDS faith - which is fine. But then you'll only come away with a bit more knowledge. We preach that this is the same church that Jesus Christ set up - with all the blessings and ordinances that were in Christ's original church. This is the way to eternal salvation - through Christ and the gospel that he taught.

Regardless of that, the gospel can help people change. We just committed a single mother Ana and her daughter Lakia to baptism on the 7th of September. She is putting her life together, teaching her 4 children, feeling the peace of knowing who God is and his plan for her, and quitting smoking. Seeing this is a testimony to me. I know that she will continue to gain confidence in herself and control over her life as she keeps the commandments of God.

There is another guy who honestly believes that it's either Islam or Mormonism that has it right - and I can see where he's coming from - but more on that later.

I know that this letter has alot of God in it, but that is my life now and it is fantastic! I love you guys and I thank you for everything you have done that has made me who I am today. I thank both of you for the oppurtunity to find my own way. I pray for all of your safety as I know that you all worry about me. I love you so much and promise that any homesickness is not making me sad, but is instead being enveloped in this glorious gospel, the people of Rapid City, and the Godhead.
Much Love,
Your Son,
Elder James Reinhardt

A shot in the arm from my favorite Missionary!

........

OUr gospel doctrine lesson last week was 6 ways out of the Church:
#Not recognizing the prophet as a source of rrevelation
#Pride
#Being critical of leader's imperfections
#being offended
#Rationalizing disobedience
#accepting false teachings of the world
...
My companion had a revelation yesterday (an inspired thought that just came to his head) that said something like "your self esteem should not come from your environment or what others think of you. It should come straight from the relationship that you have with your heavenly father."

Also, if you treat a less active member like a less active member, there will be no change! These are things you already know and I know that you are fantastic when it comes to what people neeed and how to provide them with such.

One story (i only have 5 mins left on the comp!) Ben Kohler. Big guy, has the "reaper" tattooed to his arm because that was his street name. His mom committed suicide when he was 14. the catholic chruch told him that his mom was going to hell for that sin that she committed. So, part of the reason that he: beat people and left them in the streets, got paid to hurt others, sold dope, used dope, is so that he could meet his mom there and ask her some questions.

We shared alma...12:29-31 and that helped that. but main story is that all the hate that has taken root in him - he knows that it wont be easy, but with God, Jesus, and himself it can be ripped out.

Also, when his 1.5 month old daughter grabs his finger, he is filled with nothing but love.
Mom i only have 30 seconds left before i'm kicked off, but i love you and dad and jayson and jamie!

...Like a Kid in a Candy Shop

I have to write quick! grr. so much to do on your day off! haha I finally understand a small part of all you do =)
We have found the almighty gu-ru out here. Bro Fredrickson is a RM from Brazil! He is also a Gospel genius. He can get deep without getting out into kolob stuff.
here are some small truths that I can kind of remember (along with things to think about)

All decisions are based on either a desire to Escape or Pursue. I.E. Are you angry because you want to be? Or are you angry because you're trying to escape or hide from something - are you scared?

Are you a rebel as that being your goal, or as that being somewhere that is not where you are now (running away from something).

Who tempted satan? WHy is his plan so evil? Because he would be the only one to progress. He would halt aall of god's creation (which progression is god's work and glory) and only let himself, satan, progress.

Does god know everything you did before you did it? Yes. How else could he atone for your sins. How else could he feel what a holocaust would feel like if he did not already know.

Was Christ God before this life? To enjoy all that God enjoys is to have immortality (body and spirit not to be seperated ever again) and eternal life (to live as god lives, with him). We weren't close to either. However, Christ probably did experience eternal life. He just needed a body to experinece immortality.

Lastly, thank you so much for the Conner T-shirt! I miss that little guy and I'll wear that everywhere! Tell Brian and Natalie I love them!

Tell Granny and Gramps thanks so much for the letter and ties! I loved them both and I'll write them back soon.
Thank you so much for the package and postcards, and jerky, and pictuers!!!!

sometimes on this mission, I feel like a kid in a candy shop =D

James is in South Dakota - mining for Diamonds in the Rough!

James is waiting for his Visa by serving the people of South Dakota!  ( -- mining = proselyting; Diamonds are people who don't yet know their true worth!)

The Address is:
SDRCM
2525 W. Main Suite #311
Rapid City, SD 57702

SDRCM stands for South Dakota Rapid City Mission!

He arrived last Monday!  We got this email yesterday and are tickled to share it with you! - This is a letter to his Mission President:

This mission is the best!  My companion is the best example of what a missionary is all about.  We work hard for the people of Rapid City and work hard to follow all the rules.  I have noticed that my capacity to love people has increased.  I do feel crestfallen when our investigators do not keep out commitments and am overjoyed with the tell us what they've read in the Book of Mormon.

One couple that we've focused on recently is Ben and Meri.  They (and we) have seen that the Book of Mormon applies to their lives.  We have recently shared Mosiah 4 with them.  We can experience the same feelings that King Benjamin's people felt -- clean hearts, pure consciences, and a desire to do evil no more.  President, rest assured that this Gospel is true to me.  I can see it work in my life and in the lives of the people around me.  Elder Edwards and I go to bed exhausted each night and having no regrets about our day!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ and in a letter to his friends he shares this story I'd like to share with you!:
....I told myself, sarcastically, that my companion would be captain of the XC team and wanna run up a mountain every day before proselyting...so guess what? - Every day at 6:30, we run up a ountain and back down =D!  Love my companion and I love this Mission!
If you have your book of Mormon, read Mosiah 4 and look and feel for what the atonement feels likein the peoples' lives!  We got to share this inspired scripture with a man who has had a rough life. His "street name" was 'the Reaper".  He's witnessed suicides, homicides, substances, abuse, and everything else you could possibly think of ... but he is changing his life!  He has a daughter now, Sylvia, and when he looks into her eyes, all the pain that he carries seems to melt away and you can only see the love that he has for his family.
Not only that, but the missionaries always say that if you wanna change your life and have all the commandments of God be easy for you -- you just need to READ SCRIPTURES,  PRAY, and ATTEND CHURCH!  This is sooo true!
Gotta Go!
Love ya all!!!!
James
Lots of Love - Lots of pictures!
         In the Celestial Room at our last temple trip, I had a chance to talk with my eloved friend, Elder XS, I told him that instead of just experimenting on the word, experiment on the Spirit!  The MTC has such a strong Spirit that based on your obedience - you should pray with a pencil in order to receive personal revelation to heartfelt prayers.  I was so grateful when he took me up on my word, but bummed when he expressed 2 days ago that he's been praying hard for investigators and personal questions without receiving insight.
I love hearing tat the gospel is going to town in our home!  that's so great!  I remember how much you helped me with my Faith in God Award!
A lot of the district just got reassignments today!  Yahoo!!!  One elder is going to Denver, Colorado and we haven't seen where the sisters are going yet!   - Perhaps that's why we're staying here a bit longer -- Read my email about Elder X -- we still have lives to touch!
[Email reads:  "this is what a weekly report to the branch presidency looks like:
     Dear Presidency,
         This week has been so fantastic!  Today we wnt through the 'in-field Orientation' which out and out got me pumped for the mission field!  Though I do not feel ready in the langage, I do feel that through high expectations, smart goals, and faith - I can do anything.
         I've been thinking quite a bit about faith this week...what's faith and what's just brazen wishful thinking!  If I set a goal of 25 baptisms in a month, am I having faith, or just a crazy hope?  The difference is that you ave to start with the Spirit, let go of the natural man (am I doing this for me or not), and follow through having a trusting hope that our God is a God of miracles.
          He wants to receive a solid testimony for his investigators, faith for miracles, and insight for his questins (they all go hand in hand).  Elder Capawana and I have been talking with him and trying to help him best we can.  Last night, I shared Alma 32:16 with him.  We asked if he had a sure undeniable knowledge of the things he was teaching.  He didn't.  We asked him if he had a desire to believe and a hope that he would receive inspiration.  He did.  We then asked him what this was.  His reply?  'hmmm.... I do have faith.'
         It was the best thing ever!  Elder X wants so badly to have faith and all he has to do is recognize that he already has it.  The next step is to find out how the Spirit talks to him.  We suggested that perhaps, his Father wants him to search what He has already given him: scriptures, Patriachal Blessing and MTC devotionals.
         Not only do we love this elder but we love being able to share some of the doctrine, wisdom, and insight that we learned - and wish we had a lot sooner.
        I understand that this letter should include more topics than what was written, but I felt that was important.
       As for my progress, please know that I made a personal VOW to preach the gospel to every creature because I didn't share enough to my friends back home.
      I love you all
      Elder Reinhardt'"
 By the way, you were right!  Family history is COOL!  We all watched a video on family history as part of our MTC training.  Can you tell me your testimony of family History?  Do you have any stories to tell?  I have to know more about how awesome it is so I can use it!
They said that family history is the 'bridge between casual conversation and sharing the work of salvation with God's Children."  Key indicators for family history and where it can make an impact is when people:  1) Move from home  2) Have family reunions   3) Marriage/birth    4) death or illness   5) retirement
July 5th:
It's so good to hear from you Mom!
......you're so right, Mom, Satan's working hard, but GOD'S WORKING HARDER!!!
Poor Jamie! I'm sorry you're hurting sissy! I love you! You'll feel better soon I know it! I'm glad that you're still watching the parade though! You and Brooklyn look great! Will you tell her to email or write me! =D
Sure, sometimes Sandpoint doesn't have much to do, but it sounds like it's waking up! Seeing all those pictures makes my heart soar! Jayson being a magician (and wearing the hat I gave him =)  ) and winning at checkers! Jamie being a cowgirl in a wagon!
I love you all so much! We celebrated the 4th of July by watching 17 Miracles!!!
You HAVE TO SEE IT....it is a hard movie, but it is MTC approved. Listen to the young couple in the beginning and why they want to treck all the way from England to Zion. Feel the love of Brother Savage and how he just wants to be back with his boy and follow the will of the lord. It was a tear jerker, but a testimony grower! I expect an email about you watching it soon! ;) oh, and this is the 'stadium of fire" in the background.
The MTC Presidency honestly said, "Since you've all been so good, we are going to let you stay up past your bedtime." So we got to watch fireworks =)
Love you Mom, Dad, Jayson, and Jamie!View photo in message
Relationships are borne of heaven
...I saw Parker Davis the other day! - My best friend in 8th grade?  His dad wrote The Other Side of Heaven!  Also, saw Sister hiatt!  One of Prez Hiatt's daughters!  Oh!  And I saw Sister jocelyn Verkist as well!!!  So long story short, it is soo cool (when you haven't seen a friend in soo long)  to see them at the best place they could be!  The MTC!  I imagine that the same experience will happen in heaven....Wow!  I'm so stoked we made it!
Thank you for all your prayers!  I do go to bed on Fire!  i feel that I get inspiration on a daily basis!  I just need to follow it more!
Tried to go up a cement step yesterday and instead, proved gravity exists...I slammed the pavement... mas, Tudo bem!
We heard a fantastic talk on Sunday by Stephen B. Allen - He showed a lot of Mormon messages - commercials -- the best one talked about the Spirit.  We are counseled to lean not unto our own understanding, to expound on that, when we follow the Spirit, we must not seek the reason - just be obedient.
We watched the Testaments this Sunday and I felt like I watched it for the first time!  I want you all to know that Eusei que Jesus Vive!  Eu tento animo por cuando Ele volta na terra Var ser LEGAL.  Nos devemos trabalhar a conhecer Jesus Cristo por meco da Expiacao antes de Ele vem.  Eu amo ele, e eu posso pregar suas palavaras. Eu gusto deste Igresia, e eu espero que todos pessoas podam escutar meo testamuntro.
Before I close... I want you all to know that I love you.  I could not ask for a better family, and I'm sure that we had already decided that we were going to help each other out in this life -- in the life before.  If you need anything from me - anything at all, let me know!
With muito Amor,
Sev Filho
Elder Tiago Reinhardt!
PS - Get some of my friend writing me!!!!
PPS -- The night I received the letter saying that Grandpa wasn't doing so hot..... I prayed HARD.  It was not a fun night.  I can tell you though that as my companion, Elder Capawana and I stretched our voices up to heaven, I received a personal witness that God loves Grandpa and Grandma.  He truly does whether they like it or not.  And even though I would love to see Grandpa on earth -- if I have to see him again on the other side -- that is ok.  I know that if so, Grandpa will be receiving the blessing promised in 2 Ne 24:3.  I know that if anything, when I see him in heaven, his mortal body will be perfected.  His stature will be coupled with Heavenly Glory.  Though I pray that I can see him again...and I know he can do it!  I also trust that God has a hand in whatever happens.  I received a witness that God would take perfect care of our good Grandpa.  I know that no matter what, God's perfect plan of justice and mercy is designed to bless Grandpa.  I know that our relationships are not bound to this earth!  If I will not be able to see him again, then I will see him as described in Alma 11:42-45.
Tudo Ben,.  Ate-logo.  Eu amo voces.
Anyway, this is from a very delicious letter James sent home on June 14th ... enjoy!
Hey Mom!
I'll be writing a ton of letters today, so this email will be kind of short ...but just wanted to say thank you (and thank you Dad, Jamie, and Jayson!) for all your support!  Thank you for having me grow up in this beautiful gospel!   Life is good on this end!
This week's picture is just us at lunch =)  I love the people here!  It is very interesting finding ways to work with people that you're with 24/7.  While on a mission, you are to be with your companion at all times - except for when using the restroom/showers -- "within sight and sound."  I'm so blessed to have a companion that is super hard working, funny, from Idaho, loves similar music, easy going, and we just get along too well =) - He'll probably be my best man -- well, whenever marriage starts to look welcoming! ;)
The hardest thing so far is trying to find out what my investigators need.  I know that you are really great with giving  your friends (and me) what they need as far as friendship, counsel, and love goes.  As I try to figure out what my investigators need in their lives, I am finding out what questions to ask them, how to listen (in another language), and how to use their responses to know if they need to hear that God loves them, or that His gospel is back on the Earth, etc...
At times I feel quite inadequate to teach someone in their native language.  But I know that as I learn more about this gospel, the Portuguese language, and work hard, God will make up for the rest.  I know that everything in this life relates back to the atonement of Jesus Christ.  Whenever we feel inadequate, that is the Devil talking.  We need to remember what God told Moses in Exodus 4:12... has he not made our mouths?  Has He not made our minds?  Has He not made our bodies?  We already have bodies given us that reflect the body of our Lord.  When we follow Him and keep His commandments, we can be an instrument in His, the Master's Hands.
Do you know how the metalsmith knows when the metal has been purified?  The metal worker puts the steel in the very hottest part of the kiln.  He then waits ... if He pulls the metal out too quick, it might still have impurities.  If He leaves it in too long, it will be ruined.  He knows it has been in the fire long enough when HE CAN SEE HIS REFLECTION IN IT.  We just need to keep holding on, even when it's hot.  He will always save us at the second before we are about to break if we really really giveit our all.  Is that now what our purpose is here?  To be tried and tested so that we can be more perfect -- more like our perfect Father?
When we fall short, it's ok.  Our perfect and celestial older Brother, Jesus Christ, already did the hard part for us.  With the perfect love that he has for us, He combined his Godly will with his mortal body and suffered the most tragic agony and most pure act of love to happen for you, for me, for everyone who ever lived, is living, and will ever live.  He already suffered the pain for every pitfall that comes upon us from our own sins, fromt
he sins of others, or from just living on this mortal sphere.  HE HAS ALREADY DONE THIS, we just need to accept Him, follow Him, and we will live a happier life.  That's all there is to it!
I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU to take up Jesus' offer to follow Him.  I can guarantee that you'll love Him for it.  I can also guarantee that there is opposition in all things -- when you start to do something good, a storm will come; Satan will try to discourage you in any way possible...However who's side do you want to be on?  I'm on team Jesus.  It may not be easy, but I promise you it will be worth it!
Em nome de nosso salvador, Jesus Cristo, Amen
A quickening of Spirit....
We were so tickled to see James and his companion on the NEWS!  Thanks a ton for sharing this, Suzy!!!  James is doing great at the MTC and really thriving in his calling!  Here are some excerpts from his latest letters!  Thanks again for all of you and your support for James -- and all of our missionaries out in the field!  What an exciting time!
" Am I waking up on fire every day?  I'm waking up happy, that's for sure!  I go to bed on fire though!
Instead of just reading scritures with a pen, I pray with a pen.  I have a sure testimony that God guides this district through letting me receive inspiration.  I feel like my mind is quickened whenever I am using my calling:  companionship interviews, meetings, giving counsel, etc.
Thanks for sending my white clothes!  Thanks also for the care pakage - the elders here loved the licorice!  I'm so thankful for the letters and love!  As district leader, I'm the first to see the mail -- even though I don't look at it til the evening when everyone gets to :)  And I always love seeing letters from my family!
Oh, my GOODNESS!!!  I went to the Provo Temple today with my best friend!  Elder Capansura is not only a stud, but we're so similar!  Both from ID, his family comes up to Sandpoint to see his grandparents, he is a hard worker, doesn't complain, studies the language a ton, into cycling, loves and befriends everyone, has a GRAND sarcastic humor (and can look you straight in the face and with his gameface, get you to believe anything he says, just because he's excellent at telling tall tales with a straight face)  and enjoys actually staying in the temple for a long time!
Please get this address out on facebook or just the dear Elder thing:)
